The Origins of 9 Ball: Uncovering its Inventor

Dunhill introduced the LB shortly following the end of World War I and the shape soon became one of, if not the most popular. The post war ODA 832 and 841 are also noteworthy given the similar contrasts. The 832, the earliest known post war "ODA’ shape (two Shells are known from 1949), was a classic LB with a slightly thicker bowl and shank and most noteworthy an extended ‘Canadian’ length shank and short saddle bit. It is not happenstance that two of my three thin shank LB / 7s have cracked shanks, or that both my 1962 ‘pencil shank’ 835s have tenon repairs. A pair of pipes falling, in shape and size, midway between a standard 835 and my 1953 ‘pencil shank’ 835. All of which leads me to speculate that the more then satisfactory results from cutting down a few flawed 841s (my 1961 ‘pencil shank’ 835) led Dunhill to briefly consider introducing a new, more delicate, ODA billiard shape. Mystery solved, or so I thought until I acquired two more ‘pencil shank’ 835s, a Shell and a TanShell, dating to 1962. The acquired 1962 835s both have thinner shanks and bowls then the 1961, too thin in both respects to comfortably speculate that they were recut from flawed 841s, or any other ODA shape for that matter.
This innovation made it more challenging to pocket balls in sequential order, giving rise to a new game that focused on potting the lowest numbered ball on each shot. In the game of English billiards, there are only three balls-two cue balls and a red ball. The format of 9-ball, where players must pocket the balls in numerical order, adds an element of strategy and anticipation. Although this sounds simple enough, opponents must learn how to use the bumpers to their advantage. Indeed the same is only slightly less true for the two gold banded pipes pictured next above, with second from the top pictured pipe seemingly serving as a transition piece as it departs from the standard LB shape only as regards its straight sided bowl. All of this leads me to speculate that the 482 was designed and the bowls carved in 1930/1931, perhaps with the American market in mind since we tend to prefer larger pipes. They are virtually identical pipes save for an inch and a half longer shank of the 841. An inch and half that on my new acquisition was no doubt originally flawed. Yet three of these variants are stamped LB (the fourth is not stamped with a shape identifier).
In the pictures for this article a shape identifier in parenthesis, i.e. "(LB)" signifies this lack of stamping. Exacerbating the cost of historic preservation in Boone County is a lack of local tax incentives that defies a national trend. In 1889, Frey was tied for first place in the national championship tournament, when he died suddenly of pneumonia. He was the undefeated champion of the first major Canadian billiards tournament, the undefeated champion of the last American four-ball billiards tournament, and the undefeated champion of the first major American pool tournament. Of other note is that 1925 represents the first known Dunhill magnum billiard which is shaped like a cross between the 1920 (LB) and the 1927 LB/7 but without the pencil shank. When we lived in the UK, I was surprised to learn that the Brits pronounce the word snooker with a long U sound (like in boot), whereas I (an American from the west) pronounce snooker with a short U (like in book).
The "oft-told" story is that snooker was army slang for a cadet; the word was used about someone who was playing poorly. And finally, there’s the word English, as in to give the ball some English. Today, 9 ball remains one of the most popular cue sports, enjoyed by players and fans alike. Whether you’re a casual enthusiast or a professional player, Billiards Speculation the intriguing history and enduring popularity of 9 ball make it an exciting and engaging addition to the world of cue sports. The WCBS entered a bid to be one of the additional sports for the Tokyo Olympics. Unfortunately in June 2015 the WCBS was not one of the international federations shortlisted to participate in the next phase in the Tokyo selection process. With one exception the 482 is known only in the Shell finish. Or to be more precise, pool is a somewhat generic name for "any of various games of billiards played on an oblong table having 6 pockets with usually 15 object balls" (Merriam-Webster). In all events keep an eye out for the 482, its more then an interesting pipe, it’s an important pipe, a great smoking pipe, IMHO as fine a shape as Dunhill has ever produced and well worth having.
