Robot vacuums will save you time and effort when it comes to cleaning. The best models do a great job at removing dust and other small particles and allow you to create no-go zones for pets or power cords.

The more expensive ones can even sweep your floors however they're not able to climb up stairs. Look for models with intelligent mapping, real-time hazards avoidance, and spacious self-emptying bins.

The robot isn't as good at cleaning as our top models, but it is great at picking up heavier items like orzo pasta, metal screws and even fine particles like sand. The only downsides are that it cannot mop and its navigation system is a little less impressive.

The best for Carpet

If you have carpeting in your home, search for a robotic vacuum that has strong pickup and maneuverability scores on carpets and rugs. Many models are good at collecting dust from low-pile rugs, and some can be quite effective in cleaning up larger debris like orzo pasta and screws made of metal. But they don't pick up small particles as well as canister or upright vacuums and can miss ground-in dirt close to baseboards and thresholds.

For carpeted homes the 2-in-1 robot vacuum is the best option. You can exchange the cleaning bin for a moist mopping mat. Another option that is worth considering is the iRobot Roomba Combo i5, which was a great performer in our tests and can be scheduled via the app to clean while you're away from home. It can also be set to only mop and we loved its impressive navigation on both bare floors and rugs as well as its ability to climb over and up onto furniture. The Combo i5 has a long runtime and excellent path planning for an item of this size.

If you're looking for a top-of-the-line vacuum that is high-tech, the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop is a fantastic alternative. It has a large dock that can last for weeks and not need to be cleaned. It also features impressive ability to navigate and auto-empty on carpets and bare floors. It's also got a smart-mapping system and can be programmed to operate during certain hours of the day (a useful feature that can keep the sly kids and pets from causing chaos). The Shark is less powerful than other robot vacuum/mop combinations, but it does pick hair and pet hair very well. It's also the highest price of our top picks.

Best for Hard Flooring

They do an excellent job of picking up crumbs and dust, but they struggle with pet hair and larger debris.
