The Best Robot Hoover

Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our floor tests that test for bare floors and are particularly effective at cleaning pet hair. However, they do have a few flaws however, which hinder them from being our top option. For one, the Q5's navigation doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to become entangled in shoes and socks and can't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't come with an image sensor that lets it see the corners of an area.

However, it's a good choice to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on an iRobot Roomba and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also extremely quiet and can be used while you're at work or school. The only thing it lacks that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective in mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 does have an auto-emptying dock, however. And, if you need to, you can swap the mopping pad for dry ones in just a few minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into a compact, sleek package. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it easy to clean and efficient in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also features strong suction and self-emptying bin. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, although it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop uses sensors to avoid obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the structure of your home over time and offer more efficient cleaning. The app lets you customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average when compared to similar models.

If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can tell it to remove and extend its mops. This helps prevent cross contamination. Its flex arm is also perfect for getting under furniture that is low and along baseboards. It doesn't perform as well on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

During testing, X30 Ultra was the most efficient robot autonomous vacuum/mop which could complete the task of cleaning a whole home, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It also did a great job of cleaning a mix of floors and rooms that had mixed flooring types, including certain area rugs. Its obstacle detection was superb and it was able to avoid fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles cables.

It's a bit more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after vacuuming this feature, which we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combos.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

This mop and vacuum combination features a sleek, circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba model than the boxy models of the competition. It's among our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It has advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to the combination of high-tech sensors including a structured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

As with other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, with a simple mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only issue is that it's still quite loud, which can be an issue if you use it in the morning prior to work or in the evening as you attempt to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, but it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are equally powerful and look better. It's a dual-purpose vacuum that's very capable, but it's more expensive and make more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features that will let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine that is similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically empty the vacuum's bin, refills the water tank, and cleans and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot vacuum cleaners best makes use of a combination of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and identify obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its top rivals. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this wasn't foolproof in our tests and was often confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house depending on how dirty they tend to be.

For larger homes, it's worth opting for models that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a particular area of your house by using the app or voice controls. A stairway mode is useful if you have a lot furniture. Also a recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to pick up right where it left off is ideal for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price suggests. It does a stellar job vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad and a reciprocating movement that is more efficient than most mop cleaners for robots that we've examined. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and a self emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you set on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, set up the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritize your most filthy rooms to ensure better performance. The app comes with a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

It also has the ability to reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It features an impressive 8000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs to remove pet hair. You can also set up a spot-clean that will thoroughly clean an area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and more affordable alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras look like cute eyes. It is capable of vacuuming, but it is more susceptible to be caught by low thresholds and is louder than the other top robotic vacuums we've tested. It also has an app that's not as intuitive, and a smaller base station that doesn't double as a bin to empty.
